Our new home is a special one. Located on the banks of the Regent’s Canal, the fully accessible, zero waste construction has prompted our team to consider our vision for the next stage of growth and development for our business itself.

For the past decade, the home of The Future Laboratory has been three grade II-listed Georgian townhouses in historic Spitalfields. Laterally converted (badly) in the 1950s, formerly the office and garages of a light haulier company that serviced the nearby fruit and veg market, the ramshackle site comprised the original 18th-century buildings (some still without running water), a 1950s warehouse addition, a yard, an undercroft and walled gardens. Quirky, charming and full of character, these spaces helped define the growth and success of our operations, client events and company culture.

Even before Covid struck, our working practices had begun to alter and we had started the search for something more compatible with our changing needs. As with so many things, the pandemic accelerated our need for a new space that was more aligned to our requirements in the Transformative Twenties – that and the fact that the building had been sold.

Thankfully, we didn’t need to look long or far, and at the start of 2022, The Future Laboratory moved to a purpose-built space in the heart of one of London’s most vibrant cultural quarters – Haggerston.

Surrounded by some of London’s most forward-thinking, innovative and engaging bars, pubs, clubs, eateries, commercial and cultural spaces, our new home is a special one. Located on the banks of the Regent’s Canal and designed by Waugh Thistleton Architects, 6 Orsman Road is home to Storey, British Land’s managed office enterprise and community, with the Haggerston site specially designed for SMEs in the media, tech and creative sectors. It’s a fully accessible, zero-waste construction shaped by the principles of reduce, re-use and recycle.

According to the architects: ‘The driving principle of the design was zero-waste construction, and the building can ultimately be demounted. Every element of the construction has been considered to ensure as much as possible can be re-used or recycled once the building reaches the end of its useful life.’

As part of a series of initiatives to proactively tackle its carbon footprint and environmental impact, The Future Laboratory has launched a sustainability policy comprising tactical decisions on its future that will have direct environmental benefits; the move to our new office was carefully chosen for its sustainability rating and carbon-neutral status, and reducing our office space to less than one third of its previous size will also contribute to a marked reduction in our ongoing carbon footprint.

Here at The Future Laboratory, our team are constantly striving for betterment in all areas, particularly for people and the planet. By holding ourselves and each other to account in a compassionate way, we have built a culture that allows each of us to do our best work. To this end, the team have drawn up a Cultural Charter – a statement of intent and a vision for the next stage of growth and development for the company.

For the next five years and beyond, the two pillars that make up the focus of our Cultural Charter will be Sustainability and Equity – ensuring we have a successful future based on equitable empowerment, with a lasting legacy. The future cannot happen without this commitment, and it is the responsibility of us all, both as individuals and as a community at The Future Laboratory. We are happy to share this charter with you and we hope you find it useful.
