The Future Laboratory was commissioned by Omio, the leading multimodal travel booking platform for global travellers, to create a foresight report exploring how journeys will evolve by 2035, touching on new travel behaviours, emerging trip experiences and technological evolution.

The project set out to identify how people’s needs and emerging technologies will redefine journeys over the next decade, highlighting key shifts across inspiration, identity, flexibility, convenience and multimodal movement.

‘The way we think about taking trips is changing,’ says Martin Raymond, co-founder of The Future Laboratory. ‘Planning, inspiration, the experience en route and even post-travel touchpoints are all taking on new significance. Instead of just getting from A to B, it’s about how the entire journey feels and adapts along the way. In the next decade, the most successful platforms will be those that respond to this shift, creating journeys that are seamless, responsive and far more personal.’

As global mobility becomes increasingly fragmented across rail, bus, ferry, air and micromobility, new forms of seamless cross-modality are emerging. By 2035, global travel will see international arrivals rise to 2bn annually, while Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia and India will contribute more than £680bn ($916bn, €802bn) in outbound spending by 2030 (sources: WTM, McKinsey & Co). In this context, Omio is positioning itself to meet the growing demand for journeys that feel more intuitive and flexible.

At The Future Laboratory, we recently partnered with Omio to explore how travel will transform in the years ahead. Our research examined the ways in which consumers’ psychological drivers, such as trust, control, escapism and personal identity, will intersect with AI, predictive agents, loyalty ecosystems and frictionless booking platforms.

The report features original interviews with experts in technology, travel and behaviour, including University College London’s consumer psychologist Dr Dimitrios Tsivrikos, futurist Rohit Talwar, YouTube’s head of culture and trends (EMEA) Roya Zeitoune, and Omio’s president of B2C Europe Veronica Diquattro.

In this report, The Future Laboratory and Omio offer a future view of how tomorrow’s travel experiences can better serve the next generation of journey-makers.
