Welcome to ICYMI*, In case you missed it, our weekly debrief of the trends we spotted first making it to the mainstream and the thought-provoking insights you need to know, curated by our in-house experts.

Robotic dogs, transparent laptops and a flying car all met under one roof for this year’s Future-First themed Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. For four days, industry leaders shared their thoughts on the future of tech, connectivity and, unsurprisingly, the challenges and opportunities artificial intelligence (AI) poses for the telecommunications industry.

Set against a backdrop of the Spanish sun and free-flowing Estrella beers, the panels and keynotes ranged from the future of AI-generated film stars to the benefits of edge computing in addressing privacy and data sovereignty issues in AI applications.

Thermal Earring by University of Washington, US

#WeSawItComing : The Great Wealth Transfer

The Thermal Earring, a ground-breaking innovation in wearable technology from researchers at the University of Washington, promises to unlock new ways to merge health monitoring with fashion. Unlike traditional wearables, which focus on wrist or finger biometrics, the Thermal Earring uses the earlobe to provide more accurate body temperature readings, essential for tracking health indicators like ovulation and menstrual cycles in women. Powered by two sensors, the earrings offer precise measurements that account for ambient temperature variations. The compact design incorporates low-power Bluetooth connectivity, enabling seamless data transmission to paired smartphones.

In 2023, in our Longevity Lifestyles macrotrend report and our analysis of Wearables: The At-home Doctor, we highlighted how the market for wearable health tech will keep growing as consumers want to collect as much data as possible on their health and wellbeing. The Thermal Earring adds stylish customisation to the equation and opens swaths of opportunities in the market.
