DTC: Direct to Couture

Luxury house Balenciaga is challenging the exclusivity of the haute couture sector with a Couture Store in Paris that will be open to everyone.

The store allows everyday consumers to come in, try on and purchase garments from the brand’s recent couture collections.

According to Cédric Charbit, CEO of Balenciaga, ‘The idea of couture as only for the elite is no longer valid’ (source: The New York Times).

E-couture

To achieve official haute couture status, luxury houses may soon be required to follow a new set of sustainability standards.

In Italy, couture newcomer Aelis is partnering with the University of Siena to explore the potential of hemp fabrics and sustainable dyeing processes.

To cut carbon emissions, French grand couturier Julien Fournié, whose clients are mainly based in the Middle East, is creating software for remote 3D fittings that would eliminate the need for air travel to Paris.

Continue the conversation: If couture fittings are conducted remotely in the future, how can companies ensure that they’re still a special experience for very important clients?

Couture Collaborations

Every haute couture season, luxury house Jean-Paul Gaultier hands control to a different designer, allowing them to guest create a collection.

Now, couture collaborations are becoming more common. Balenciaga recently partnered with audio company Bang & Olufsen to release a speaker bag that can be used as a portable audio device or a functional handbag.

Market spotlight: India

While India is renowned for its craft and needlework traditions, the country has rarely received the attention it deserves from the fashion elite.

Earlier this year, Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri put a spotlight on the Indian artisans that help with couture collections by commissioning a 3,600-square-feet tapestry backdrop based on the work of two Indian artists, Madhvi and Manu Parekh.

In the future, haute couture could even be manufactured with living micro-organisms such as bacteria.

During Paris Fashion week, Iris van Herpen, a corresponding member of the Parisian Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, unveiled a vegan haute couture dress made with cocoa bean husks in collaboration with Belgian ice cream company Magnum.

At Spanish luxury house Loewe’s spring/summer 2023 menswear show, creative director Jonathan Anderson and Spanish textile designer Paula Ulargui Escalona incorporated living plants into clothing and footwear.
